merry berry christmas margarita

Alternatively named: The Festive As Fuq Margarita.

I’m sure I won’t go haywire with holiday cocktails this year, as I did last year – but I just had to use these lovely tree glasses that I bought a month or so ago. Aren’t they precious? And honestly, looking at them puts me in a holly jolly mood.

Weekend sipping comes in the form of this lovely, pretty Merry Berry Christmas Margarita. I pulled this name right out my ass and honestly, I like it. Straightforward but nods to the season. My kinda nomenclature.

Semi related side note: who’s been proactive so far with their Christmas shopping? You won’t see me raising my hand. I took care of my mom’s gift but otherwise I’m a bit uninspired and a bit clueless, and I’m quite miffed at myself because I’m usually quite on top of this shit. It’s been an off year, to be fair. And, especially, a month of literally fucken winging it.

Sometimes, winging it yields some good shit. My recipes lately have largely been winged, based on random spurts of inspiration. I’d say I’ve done pretty well, too.

I hope you think so, at least, with this drink. It’s got some citrusy spunk, some sweetness, and of course a good hit of tangy tequila. Santa would probably enjoy if you left one of these babies out (hold the ice, please) alongside his cookie tray. Just sayin’.

We Need a Little Christmas (Margarita)

RIGHT THIS VERY MINUTE.

Except I’m probably gonna get a beer soon, but that’s not relevant.

I always like the little extra sparkle of a sugar rimmed glass. Run a lime wedge around the rim of your choice drink vessel, then dip into some sugar. Sometimes I’ll add cinnamon or ginger, but regular sugar felt right here.

Now, for the drink. Snag your cocktail shaker and throw in tequila, limoncello, cranberry juice, lime juice, agave, and some ice. Shake it till cold, then pour into your pretty rimmed glass. Pour in a few splishes of sparkling water for a little bubbly action.

As far as garnishes go, I love making some sugared rosemary. Looks like a snowy tree branch. Whip up a quick simple syrup of sugar and water, then dunk a few sprigs into the mixture. Lay onto a wire rack (above a baking sheet or parchment to catch wayward drips) and sprinkle both sides with granulated sugar. Let the rosemary sit for awhile to set the sugar coating.

Tip: do this same process with cranberries if you’d like!

Have a great weekend, peeps. I’ll be trying to do that myself.

Servings 1 cocktail

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 oz tequila
  • 1 oz limoncello
  • 3 oz cranberry juice
  • 1/2 oz lime juice
  • 1-2 tbsp agave, or to taste
  • sparkling water, to top
  • sugared rosemary and cranberries, for garnish (see note)

Instructions

  • Run a wedge of lime around the rim of a cocktail glass. Dip and swirl into the sugar, shaking off excess.
  • In a cocktail shaker, combine the tequila, limoncello, cranberry juice, lime juice, and agave. Fill with ice and shake until cold. Pour into the prepared cocktail glass and top with as many splashes of sparkling water as you please. Garnish with cranberries and sugared rosemary, as desired.

Notes

*Sugared rosemary: Heat 1/2 cup of water with 1/2 cup of sugar in a small pot, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Dip several sprigs of rosemary into the syrup and lay on a wire rack set atop a baking sheet or a piece of parchment. Sprinkle both sides with sugar. Let sit for at least 30 minutes until set. You can also repeat this process with the cranberries if you wish!
