lavender hot chocolate

Sleepytime hot chocolate.

Happy Friday, peeps! Whenever I sift through my grotesquely disorganized baking cabinets, I find this massive bag of dried lavender that I’ve had since the beginning of time and will probably never use up even if I live until 100.

Every year I mosey through my brain to think of new concepts, and thankfully I’ve stumbled across a few good ones. Like today’s sweet little sip.

Lavender and chocolate is a very underrated but highly effective combination. The floral notes balance out the bittersweet and create a surprising and unique flavor play that works especially well in beverage form. My Lavender Hot Chocolate is playful and cozy, mellow and sweet, a cup of joy on a cool spring morning or evening.

The best part? It’s very easy to make. Join the club of those of us with way too much dried lavender in our pantries!

Peace, Love, and Lavender

One little pot, your stovetop, and a few minutes of your time. Easy, right?

As far as acquiring your lavender goes, many places carry it. I bought mine from Amazon, which probably explains the gargantuan quantity. Just be sure what you select is pure, culinary-grade lavender.

To make your cocoa, combine the following into a small saucepot: milk (whole milk is my favorite, then soy, but you can use what you like), chopped dark chocolate (from a bar, ideally!), cocoa powder, brown sugar, and a scoop of dried lavender.

Heat gently, whisking often, until the milk starts to steam. Shut off your burner and warm a few minutes longer, stirring occasionally to agitate the chocolate and ensure it melts properly. Whisk in the vanilla to finish.

Use a fine mesh sieve to strain the cocoa into your favorite mug. The lavender flavor is well-infused at this point and thus there’s no need to chew on the leaves and possibly choke on them (if you’re me, at least) while sipping your drink.

Top with a big blob of whipped cream and enjoy!

I’m really into sharing non-alcoholic drinks lately. Cocktails are fun and all, but it’s also nice to share basic, practical bevs for those of us who want to wind down without the buzz. What are your favorite non-boozy beverages? Let me know and I’ll see about recreating them in future weeks!
