citrus mezcal punch

A bit of sparkle and glam for the new year upcoming.

Do you make resolutions for January 1? While I’m not inclined to believe in waiting so long to create goals, sometimes the fresh start mentality helps people narrow in on what they want, so I don’t find myself critical of those who choose to list things out. The older I get, the more I think minding my own damn business benefits not only myself, but everyone else.

That said, I do set some intentions for the new year. Since my birthday falls on the 30th, I aim to start those intentions once my age flips another year. Easy to realize that the actual new year doesn’t mean shit to me, with my birthday so close.

What I want to accomplish this year?

…Read more. I sucked at books this year, and find a lot of peace in sitting down after a long day to a few pages. I’d like to finish one per month, at least.

…Socialize more. Since COVID, I’ve definitely transformed into a recluse. All of the folk I’d want to be around are vaccinated, so I feel comfortable around them – I just need to learn to say yes to more invites, and wiggle out of my comfort zone.

…Take care of my hair. For the better part of three years my hair was a true rat’s nest. I chopped the dead shit off yesterday and got some new haircare products to try, and because I’m pretty good at creating and sticking to routines, I’ll certainly lean into a regimen that suits my lifestyle and my hair’s needs.

That’s really all I’ve got. Let’s work through our tribulations together. Raise a glass of this Citrus Mezcal Punch with me?

Smoking Out 2021

This easy, gorgeous cocktail involves no heating, no muddling, and just a few simple ingredients. You can easily convert it into a punch bowl if serving a big crowd. The proportions for such are found below.

All you need is a cocktail shaker and some ice. Squeeze the juice of half a blood orange into the shaker along with lime juice, orange liqueur, pomegranate juice, and mezcal. I love the fiery flavor of mezcal alongside citrus – perfect blend of sweet and strong.

Shimmy and shake up the components and pour into the prettiest glasses you own. Top with pomegranate arils, a blood orange slice or two, and some fresh mint. Tasty and dazzling.

I don’t really have plans for NYE. Usually I end up in bed at my normal time and J wakes me up to shuffle in my slippies for a fireworks viewing. I usually grumble about it, but am glad to witness the show regardless. I don’t work the following day, so a bit of extra festivity won’t kill me, I don’t think.
